There were smiles all round when the Tamworth Intermodal Freight Facility officially opened on Friday, 15 March 2024.
Tamworth Mayor Russell Webb and Tamworth Regional Council General Manager Paul Bennett was joined by Qube Logistics General Manager of Supply Chain Solutions Sean Hovey to cut the ribbon on the game-changing regional facility.
"This is a landmark asset that will position Tamworth and New England for years to come," Sean said.
"A lot of time and effort has gone into the development of this terminal. We were excited to see one of the new Qube Locos arrive on site with a trainload of containers filled with local agricultural projects."
The new facility will enable businesses to transfer their products and commodities from truck to train and provide a direct rail route to vessels docked at Port Botany and Port Newcastle, many of which are shipped to America and Asia.
"Tamworth is a thriving community and has a growing industry base," said Sean.
"And with the growth of the Global Gateway Park and new warehouses coming on site here, we are excited to see how much it lends itself to the volume of items coming out of the port."
About the site
Qube’s facility is approximately 10 ha in size, which will gradually develop as volume grows. The site can accommodate 90 reefers on power, and 1500 teu box storage with throughput capacity of approximately 15,000 teu. Qube offers reefer container storage, and container hire and sales from the site.
Tamworth Intermodal Freight Facility connects to the main rail network via a 5 km spur line from West Tamworth rail yards. From there, we connect to Werris Creek, Newcastle and Sydney for connections to Qube’s intermodal terminals at Moorebank and Minto. Freight is then sent to port to meet waiting vessels as needed with our port shuttle trains, allowing Qube to optimise two-way loading into and out of Port Botany.
The commencement of services out of Tamworth Intermodal Freight Facility supports the modal shift from road to rail, improves the resilience of our freight networks, and enables local producers to efficiently move products to overseas market, opening new and exciting trade opportunities to the region.
At Qube, we’re proud to play a part in keeping communities strong and the wheels of industry turning by building key supply chain infrastructure.
